Job Description:

Position Summary

This position reports to the Unit Supervisor in the Bureau of School Nutrition and serves as a nutrition specialist for nutrient analysis and menu review required for menu certification and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) School Nutrition Program Administrative Reviews. This position analyzes menus of agencies participating in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs for nutrient content and completes the Meal and Nutrition Quality, Smart Snacks, and Buy American sections of the Administrative Reviews. In addition, this position develops and conducts courses on topics related to nutrition, nutrition standards, menu nutrient analysis, menu planning, production records, recipe standardization, USDA regulations and requirements for school meals, and all foods sold in schools, i.e., Smart Snacks regulations.

Salary Information

Depending on qualifications, the salary will be between $28.00 - $31.82 per hour (approximately $58,240 - $66,185 per year). For current and eligible former State employees, compensation will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan effective at time of hire. This position is in pay schedule 11, range 04. A one-year probationary period will be required.

This position offers excellent benefits. The State of Wisconsin is a qualifying employer for the federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.

Job Details

Remote Work: This position has the option of working 100% remote with a requirement that the employee is expected to have access to secure high speed internet. DPI employees are generally expected to work within the state of Wisconsin. Advance approvals are required to have an out-of-state telework site. Remote work flexibility will be discussed in more detail during the interview process.

Travel: During the school year, this position will have frequent in-state travel. Details will be discussed further in the interview.

Headquarters: The position is headquartered at 201 W. Washington Ave. in Madison, WI, and employees are required to report there their first day of employment. In addition, the employee may need to report to their headquarter location as operational needs require. Reimbursement for traveling to or from the employee's headquarters is not provided (e.g., mileage, meals, parking, lodging, etc.).

Pre-hire requirements: A criminal background check will be conducted prior to an offer of hire. A TB screen will be required prior to start.

Legal authorization: Applicants must be legally entitled to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., without DPI sponsorship). The Department of Public Instruction does not sponsor visas, either at time of hire or at any later time.

Qualifications

A minimally qualified applicant must have all the below:

  • Experience or education in Child Nutrition Programs (National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, etc.)
  • Experience in foodservice (e.g. food production, meal service, menu planning, recipe development, nutritional evaluation, etc.) and/or school nutrition
  • Experience providing training on topics related to nutrition
  • Eligible for or certified as a Dietitian (CD) by the State of Wisconsin and eligible for or registered as a Dietitian (RDN) by the Commission on Dietetic Registration

Please note that a college degree is not required for this position.

Well-qualified applicants will also have:

  • Experience or education with nutrition analysis
  • Experience working on a grant
  • Experience evaluating nutrition programs for compliance
  • Experience applying respect, equity, and inclusion practices
