What's this role about?

The Project Engineer (Japan) will provide technical support for DR (Demand Response) and FTM BESS (Grid Energy Storage System) projects currently operating in the supply and demand balancing market, and will also accelerate the development of new projects through collaboration with existing partners. The position will support stable operations and market expansion in Japan by conducting technical meetings with customers, troubleshooting, customer support, and coordinating with internal and external stakeholders.

Key responsibilities

  • Dealing with technical issues in ongoing projects, creating initial reports, providing explanations and follow-ups to customers
  • Support for remote commissioning, installation, configuration and testing of aggregator equipment (panels)
  • Responding to technical inquiries from customers
  • Work closely with the sales team, attend business meetings and provide technical explanations to accelerate and boost orders.
  • Sharing and coordinating information with various departments within the company (sales, development, NOC, finance teams)
  • Supporting the negotiation and launch of new projects in collaboration with existing partners

The ideal candidate will have a fundamental knowledge of electrical engineering, energy systems, industrial process automation, etc., and will have knowledge of power measurement, voltage transformers (VCTs), control systems, PLCs, single-line diagrams, communication protocols, and grid-connection processes, or the ability to quickly acquire these skills. We welcome practical-minded candidates with customer-facing experience who can bridge the gap between technical and commercial matters.

Additional desirable experience :

  • Experience in inspecting and responding to electrical equipment failures
  • Experience in writing technical reports and documentation
  • Experience in remote commissioning tests and support for the installation of distribution panels
  • Experience in providing technical advice during customer negotiations

 

We are also looking for someone who is proactive and able to tackle unknown challenges. While the official language within the company is English, you will primarily be working with a Japanese team, so English conversation skills are not essential (Japanese managers and colleagues can provide support), but you will need to create and read English documents using translation tools and AI (e.g., ChatGPT). We welcome candidates who are willing to work to improve their English conversation skills through their work.

In addition, this position requires the ability to act as a bridge between the technical and sales teams, communicate smoothly with stakeholders and colleagues in Japan, adaptability to flexibly take on a wide range of responsibilities including key account management, technical support, and new business development, and the ability to produce results in a fast-paced environment.

Work conditions

  • Full remote work (mainly from home). Tokyo office is available, but there is no obligation to come to the office.
  • Domestic business trips (customer service, on-site work, attendance, etc.) will be required.

 

Major accountabilities

  • Native Japanese speaker with the ability to communicate smoothly and professionally in the energy field
  • Support the sales team and resolve issues with ongoing projects through technical discussions with customers and partners, promoting the expansion and acceleration of projects (main role is key account management for existing customers, strategic partners, etc.)
  • Act as a project manager for ongoing projects
  • Understand customer sites, customer resources (facilities), operational processes, and the possibility of using them to provide balancing capacity
  • Providing timely support for equipment installation and commissioning tests in projects (support role)
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders (customers and third parties) to resolve issues and maintain customer satisfaction.
  • Concisely summarize project plans and progress and report to the Head of Audit/Commissioning Japan, and maintain up-to-date internal records (e.g., SharePoint).
  • Provide systematic feedback to development teams on tools and services based on lessons learned from live projects, leading to improved customer satisfaction
  • Accommodate additional duties and new service offerings that arise as your role expands
  • Summarize the project status, issues, and risks concisely, report to the audit and commissioning manager, and share them internally.
  • Assist in monitoring in-progress projects and provide feedback for continuous improvement

 

What do I need to be a good technical fit for this role?

  • A degree in a technical field (electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, automatic control engineering, energy engineering, etc.) is desirable but not required.
  • At least 5 years of work experience after graduation in fields such as electrical, control, and power engineering
  • Experience working for a power company, power transmission and distribution company, EPC, etc., or practical experience in industrial systems (SCADA, BMS, PLC) is preferred
  • IT skills including networking, database queries and troubleshooting are a plus
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in Japanese
  • English conversation ability is not required, but the ability to create and read English documents using translation tools and AI (e.g. ChatGPT) is required, and ideally, the candidate will be motivated to improve their English skills through this job.
  • Excellent record-keeping skills and the ability to document field issues in internal records (e.g., SharePoint).
  • A proactive attitude towards addressing issues that arise
  • Ability to work independently without immediate direct support.
