Looking to Join the Editorial Team at UMPH?

The Production Editoimplements, manages, and coordinates processes related to editorial stages of production of curriculum resources for use in the educational ministry of The United Methodist Church and beyond. The incumbent copyedits, proofs, flows into InDesign templates, and otherwise prepares manuscripts for publishing and manages the production schedule for assigned projects.

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Copyedits manuscripts for grammar, spelling, punctuation, flow/structure of text, conformity to the appropriate style, clarity of text, ease of use of instructional material, accuracy and usability of text, cross-referencing of components, adherence to design formats and publication guidelines, and completeness, as required, to prepare projects for publication.
  • Flows copy into InDesign templates. Processes all proof stages of assigned publications, checking for accuracy of content, layout, and correct placement of all illustrative material. Inserts instructions and materials to accomplish completeness at each stage in the process.
  • Coordinates the editorial stages of production for multiple publications from transmittal of manuscript from Lead Editor through delivery of the approved final proof to the Digital Production Services department and checking of printer proof. Captures assets in digital asset management system. Ensures that multiple components in a curriculum series are coordinated at proof stages. Alerts the Lead Editor about points at which input is needed to preserve the educational/theological/biblical/audience appropriateness of text and layout so that the final product meets or exceeds customer needs and expectations.
  • Researches content for factual accuracy and legal compliance. Identifies copyright permission requirements and ensures any copyright permissions are secured. Develops and prepares detailed art descriptions/requests for Design Manager to secure illustrative material as needed.
  • Works with editor and designer (and any others on the team) to secure final adjustments for accuracy, readability, and completeness. Works with designer to secure functional layouts that meet or exceed customer expectations. Coordinates in-book ads with marketing.
  • Negotiates and collaborates workable production schedules with editor, designers, marketing, DPS staff, and CDS staff to keep publications on schedule and moving through production with appropriate progress relative to other concurrent products in production to facilitate timely delivery of all products.

 

Requirements & Desired Skills

Education, Experience, & Certifications

REQUIRED

  • A Bachelor’s degree in English, religious studies, and/or a related field OR at least three (3) years of publishing experience, demonstrating a high level of competence in writing and editing.

PREFERRED

  • Publishing experience
  • Copyediting experience
  • Familiarity and experience with The United Methodist Church

  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent English grammar skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Intermediate personal computer skills (Mac)
  • Intermediate proficiency with electronic editing systems, including Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Word, and Adobe Acrobat, as well as project-management programs. 

PREFERRED

  • Experience with Adobe InDesign
  • Current or previous participation in local church religious programs
