The opportunity

Harvard Business Review (HBR) is the leading destination for smart management thinking. Through its flagship magazine, books, and digital content and tools published on HBR.org, Harvard Business Review aims to provide professionals around the world with rigorous insights and best practices to help lead themselves and their organizations more effectively and to make a positive impact.

The Production Designer is part of HBR's Editorial Production Department, acting at the intersection of editorial, design, and technology.

Their main role is to manage production design and delivery of press, magazine, and digital editorial content. This includes using design skills, technology expertise, and a systematic approach to execute and deliver materials from templates.

The role demands excellent software proficiency, attention to detail, task management, file organization, and systems thinking. This individual contributor supports multiple designers, offering digital and print design services across Harvard Business Review, and thrives in a process-driven environment.

What you'll do

  • Prepare, revise, and finalize print and digital assets—including book mechanicals, backlist covers, and templates—ensuring brand consistency and adherence to specifications.

  • Collaborate with internal teams and external vendors to implement design feedback, troubleshoot production issues, and manage asset distribution and archiving.

  • Provide comprehensive image and file management, including retouching, cropping, color correction, and maintaining organized version control.

  • Recommend and document process improvements, stay current with technology developments, and manage design for special packaging and adjacent press content.

What you’ll bring

  • Adaptable and open to feedback, with a proactive approach to learning new tools and handling last-minute changes in design and process.

  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot design and software challenges independently in fast-paced, deadline-driven environments.

  • Strong understanding of industry-standard processes for digital media, print production, and file preparation to meet printer specifications.

  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, with meticulous attention to detail.

  • Skilled in managing file organization and version control, and effectively prioritizing workload while collaborating with teams.

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite.

You’ll stand out if you have

  • High visual sensitivity to typography, hierarchy and layout.

  • Experience with print and digital products.

  • Experience with K4 Software and Jira.
