How you'll make an impact in this role
Pharmacist may be licensed in any state.
Assures the clinical integrity of the infusion intake process by conducting Medical Necessity Validation (MNV), managing complex payer escalations, and contributes to the development of the National Infusion Playbook. Serves as the primary clinical liaison between the centralized intake team and ordering physicians to resolve authorization barriers before treatment.
- Medical Necessity Validation (MNV):
Evaluates medication orders against NCCN guidelines, FDA labeling, and payer-specific medical policies to prevent denials before submission. - Clinical Evidence Synthesis:
Collaborates with ordering physicians to support and organize robust clinical substantiation, including Letters of Medical Necessity (LMN) and peer-reviewed literature for off-label use. - Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Strategy:
Prepares clinical dossiers for P2P reviews and, where permitted, facilitates or participates in discussions with payer medical directors to advocate for patient access to therapy. - National Playbook Stewardship:
Develops and maintains the National Infusion Playbook, serving as the central repository for standardized SOPs, clinical protocols, drug-specific payer rules, and automated workflows. - Payer Intelligence:
Monitors and catalogs shifting guidelines for high-dollar biologics, biosimilars (e.g., IVIG, Oncology), and immunology agents to ensure the intake team is operating with the most current medical necessity, step-therapy, and product-preference criteria. - Operational Integration:
Partners with technical personnel (Program Coordinators/Techs) to ensure clinical accuracy in the preparation of authorization requests and Good Faith Estimates. - Cross-Functional Communication:
Communicates with physicians, 340B directors, and revenue cycle leadership to facilitate care and resolve financial clearance bottlenecks.
Requires advanced critical thinking and decisive judgment in interpreting complex clinical data and payer policies. Must be able to navigate a high-volume, centralized environment with minimal supervision and act as a clinical “gatekeeper” for high-cost drug spend.
