Title:Personal Lines Underwriting - Senior Underwriter

Location: Howell United States

Job Description:

Our Personal Lines team is currently seeking a Senior Underwriter on our growing team. This is a full time, exempt role. This role is open to a fully remote opportunity.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Responsible for the underwriting and pricing of new business TAP Sales exceptions, complex new business, and renewal business for assigned agents. Responds quickly and positively to agency phone calls and submissions. Pro-actively seeks additional business from agency assignment. Manages a profitable portfolio within their stated authority and guidelines (Potentially up to $3,500,000). Frequent agency visits to drive the Personal Lines strategic agenda promoting sales and service.

IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL:

  • Own all aspects of the New Business underwriting process including acceptability and documentation at inception as well as subsequent validation/investigation through other sources
  • Spearhead the development of effective relationships with Agents and TSM's, ARVP's and RVP's that result in writing profitable new business
  • Communicate proactively with Agents to convey a sense of ownership and service during all interactions; instill confidence with agents in their decision to place new business with The Hanover
  • Plan agency visits with PL field leadership to consult on agency issues such as profitability and providing recommendations for mitigation strategies
  • Partner with agents to creatively solution for non-profitable books to help them turn their business around
  • Reviews, interprets and processes data from various sources, including applications, forms and loss history
  • Clearly communicates appetite, underwriting standards, declination reasons and coverage advantages to Agents and internal partners to ensure profitability and generate a flow of quality new business submissions and retention.
  • Also responsible for demonstrating leadership and applying and utilizing their knowledge in ways that improve the performance of the underwriting team overall e.g. through mentoring training sharing expertise participating in broader work or projects above underwriting responsibilities

WHAT YOU NEED TO APPLY:

  • 5+ years of Underwriting experience with larger more complex books of business
  • Bachelor's degree or work experience equivalent
  • Able to articulate and practice principles of risk management within specific limits of authority including knowledge of exposure/hazard identification and control
  • Demonstrated experience using independent judgement to analyze risks, accept deny or recommend modifications based on their profitability portfolio
  • Communication (written and verbal) - anticipates audience needs when communicating, actively seeks to understand when there is lack of clarity, able to clearly articulate and express points of view and perspectives both verbally and in writing.
  • Able to apply logic to decisions identifying and evaluating risks and implications. Uses current data and information to inform recommended decisions and actions.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, highly dynamic environment. Able to shift focus and manage new and changing situations.
  • Seeks opportunities to share information and offer ideas that will allow others to benefit or succeed. Shows respect for differences and diversity in ideas and views.
  • Takes personal ownership for the management of workload and output amongst assigned agents. Applies understanding of business workflows and processes to determine focus and urgency needed.
  • Effectively negotiates with agents on exceptions and recommends mitigations to make the requested exception more palatable or in line with our underwriting strategy
