McClatchy’s Publishing Center is looking for a creative, versatile editor who can collaborate with our newsrooms and other teams to produce high-quality, audience-focused digital and print products.

This production role requires a range of skills. A typical shift could include planning a local print and eEdition products, tagging content for digital optimization, assisting with newsletters and directing stories to a page template, rewriting headlines and other display type. You’ll work with multiple newsrooms of various sizes on any given day and a diverse set of syndicated content partners. Speed, flexibility, accuracy and news judgment are key attributes. The role requires night and weekend work. Experience working with local news content and digital editions is a plus.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Make decisions about story play for multiple markets.
  • Perform a role in creating or optimizing content for digital and print products (eEditions, newsletters, SEO)
  • Write subject lines/headlines/cutlines that support and enhance the stories we tell.
  • Utilize analytics to inform decisions about content play and audience engagement.
  • Monitor syndicated content and McClatchy content to select stories that will be of interest to a wide audience.
  • Show attention to detail when reviewing content prior to publication in digital or print products.
  • Handle demands for multiple newsrooms and editors.
  • Meet all product deadlines and standards for quality.
  • Help identify and implement ways to improve operational efficiency.
  • Manage content and workflow within the publishing center and partner newsrooms, and ensure that procedures are followed.
  • Communicate with colleagues and customers using established digital channels.
  • Other duties as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Skill with headline writing and caption writing to fit presentation specifications.
  • High-level editing skills.
  • Ability to create and execute story packages, including wire content and databases, for various platforms as needed.
  • Strong news judgment.
  • Ability to plan for presentation of larger projects or events requiring coordination.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills. Ability to multitask on deadline.
  • Relied upon to troubleshoot problems and quickly implement solutions.
  • Works under minimal or no supervision to complete design and/or editing duties.

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree or three years equivalent experience

The anticipated base pay for this position is $21.58 an hour. Individual base pay may vary within that range depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, department equity and relevant education.
