Job Description:
TEGNA Inc. (NYSE: TGNA) serves local communities across the U.S. through trustworthy journalism, engaging content, and tools that help people navigate their daily lives. Through customized marketing solutions, we help businesses grow and thrive. With 64 television stations in 51 U.S. markets, TEGNA reaches approximately 100 million people every month across the web, mobile apps, streaming, and linear television.
KGW is looking for a creative, driven person for a hybrid role that features both reporting and anchoring weather. As a reporter, this position will require you to shoot and edit your own stories. Known in our newsroom as a “multi-skilled journalist,” MSJs are a key part of our newsroom’s coverage on both broadcast and digital platforms. Most stories will be same-day turns, while other times you’ll be given more time to execute your vision. You can expect to work solo many days, although there are ample opportunities to work with a photographer, especially on breaking news. As a weather anchor, you will be responsible for anchoring weather on our weekend morning newscast. You may also be asked to fill in doing weather on other shows. We are looking for a candidate who embraces the digital future of our industry and can show examples of strong work on digital, streaming and social media platforms.
This role is a full-time, non-exempt position represented by SAG-AFTRA. The position will include Saturday and Sunday shifts, plus three weekday shifts.
Responsibilities:
- Report, write, shoot and edit news stories for broadcast and digital platforms. Use creative production techniques such as graphics and new forms of media to enhance stories.
- Anchor weathercasts, including building graphics and presenting a clear and accurate forecast. Meteorology certification not required but encouraged.
- Consistently pitch strong story ideas.
- Maintain the highest journalistic standards in every story you cover. We expect you’ll report stories accurate and honestly, treat sources with fairness and empathy, hold yourself accountable when you make a mistake.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or related field
- Strong understanding of journalism ethics and best practices with a minimum of three years of experience in broadcast journalism or a related field
- Experience with shooting video, video editing, and web content management systems
- Ability to generate creative, engaging, content-driven live shots
- Strong social media skills and presence
- Ability to calmly handle live, breaking news situations and changing events
- Ability to work under time pressure and meet deadlines
- Knowledge of ENPS, Edius, Premiere, After Effects and Photoshop a plus
- Ability to work any shift as assigned, including mornings, nights and weekends
Benefits:
TEGNA offers comprehensive benefits designed to safeguard the physical, mental and financial health of our employees and their families. TEGNA offers two medical plan options for full and part-time employees through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, as well as access to dental and eye care coverage; fertility, surrogacy and adoption assistance; disability and life insurance.
Our 401(k) program offers full, part-time and temporary employees the opportunity to contribute 1% - 80% of their pay on a pre-tax basis to TEGNA’s 401(k). Contributions made up to the first 4% of pay are eligible for a 100% match from the company and are 100% vested from day one.
Regardless of participation in TEGNA medical plans, ALL employees and their eligible family members receive nine free virtual doctor’s appointments with a physician through Teladoc, and 12 free annual therapy sessions with a licensed clinician through Spring Health.
TEGNA offers a generous Paid Time Off (PTO) benefit as well as nine paid holidays per year.
