Job Description:

About the Role

We're incubating a new venture within Spring Health and are seeking a Head of Engineering to serve as the technical lead and founding engineering manager. This is a unique opportunity to build a net-new product from the ground up, within the infrastructure of a $3B mental health company, focused on delivering exceptional care and scalable outcomes.

You'll be responsible for early technical execution, establishing core engineering practices, and building the team and systems to support rapid iteration and long-term scale. This is a hands-on leadership role, ideal for someone who thrives in ambiguity, enjoys building high-quality software, and is passionate about creating tools that meaningfully improve mental health care.

Reporting to the GM, New Venture with a dotted line to the CEO.

Please note that this is a hybrid role based in New York City, with an expectation to be in office 2-3 days a week. Our office is located at 60 Madison Avenue.

What you'll be doing

  • Lead early design and development of the venture's core product experiences, working closely with product and design
  • V1 product built, shipped, and scaled reliably with strong user engagement and minimal tech debt.
  • Build the foundation for engineering velocity, reliability, and quality from day one
  • Contribute hands-on to coding, architecture, and devops while shaping longer-term strategy
  • Hire and grow a small, high-performing team of engineers as the product scales
  • Define technical roadmap, system architecture, and operational processes
  • Collaborate across disciplines to launch a high-quality MVP and iterate rapidly based on feedback
  • Advocate for engineering excellence, accessibility, and secure-by-default practices
  • Establish a culture of craftsmanship, transparency, and user-centered development

What success looks like in this role

  • V1 product built, shipped, and scaled reliably with strong user engagement and minimal tech debt.
  • Engineering productivity systems are in place, including CI/CD, monitoring, and testing
  • A thoughtful architectural foundation exists to support future growth
  • The team grows with strong retention, clear feedback loops, and strong internal trust
  • Effective cross-functional partnerships with product, design, and clinical stakeholders

What we expect from you

  • 6+ years of engineering experience, including 2+ years in a technical leadership or people management role
  • Experience building and launching full-stack products, especially in early-stage or startup environments
  • Fluency with modern web technologies, ideally including Ruby, Rails, React, TypeScript, or Flutter
  • Strong systems thinking and architectural decision-making under speed and ambiguity
  • Demonstrated ability to manage technical tradeoffs and iterate toward high-impact outcomes
  • Strong collaboration skills with product, design, and go-to-market stakeholders
  • Passion for Spring Health's mission and a belief in the power of technology to transform mental health care

The target base salary range for this position is $190,000-$232,500, and is part of a competitive total rewards package including stock options and benefits. Individual pay may vary from the target range and is determined by a number of factors including experience, location, internal pay equity, and other relevant business considerations.
