Firstline Engineering Manager – Plant Instrumentation & Control (I&C) Non- Safety Control (NSC) Balance Of Plant (BOP) Systems will provide leadership to a diverse technical team of dedicated engineers responsible for the system design and implementation including integrated digital hardware and software integration, test, and commissioning of new first of a kind (FOAK) small modular reactor (SMR) designs in general and the BWRX-300 specifically.
Leadership role is a cross-functional engineering discipline centered on an approach, mindset, and process. All activities that consider both the business and the technical needs of the customers with the goal of providing a quality product that meets the users needs.
The discipline that executes a robust process of design, creation, and optimization of components or component assemblies, consisting of identification and quantification of system requirements, creation of alternate design concepts, performance of design trade studies, selection and implementation of the best designs and verification that the design is properly integrated and executed. Process that proceeds from concept to production to operation.
Impacts departmental operations and responsible for planning/execution. The role has some autonomy but is focused on execution of activities within an operating discipline covered by standard functional practices and procedures. Some judgment may be required but this is typically with guidance.
Job Description
Roles and Responsibilities
- Report to Senior Engineering Manager – BWRX-300 Plant Instrumentation, Controls, and Electric (ICE) Systems.
- Provide "hands on" technical and programmatic leadership, vision, strategy, plans and project execution of Plant Instrumentation & Control (I&C) Non- Safety Control (NSC) Balance Of Plant (BOP) Systems. This scope primarily interface with those related that are boiling water reactor (BWR) specific or steam turbine generator (STG) and its primary auxiliary systems.
- Contribute to resolution of protection, control, and monitoring [i.e.; “C” Systems] related issues within the integrated plant design, specific systems design, and component selection and application within the nuclear island (NI) and steam turbine generator (STG) convention island (CI) with its’ associated balance of plant (BOP) of the Standard Plant Design (SPD) Power Block.
- Ensure team has ownership and accountability for all aspects of the “C” Systems requirements elicitation, design, integrated hardware/software systems implementation, testing, and site commissioning support.
- Drive design assurance with design basis completeness and accuracy with the identification, definition, functional, performance, environmental, seismic, software, and cyber security requirements, “C” system specifications, assessment or evaluation, organization by type, procurement specifications, type and qualification test plans and programs.
- Ensure team’s work products comply with all applicable global industry standards and nuclear regulatory guidance to assure that it will perform its assigned function for protection, control, or either process related or component and equipment condition monitoring.
- Lead collaboration with other Disciplines [e.g.; Mechanical, Electrical, Human Factors, Plant Systems Integration, Analysis, Simulation] to ensure that the “C” Systems design bases are; properly scoped, requirements captured, functional decisions defined, interfaces identified and described, allocated, and used appropriately to iteratively mature systems design.
- Ensure that “C” Systems comply with the governance requirements from plant-wide IEC Standards based digital systems and software process engineering, cyber security, and distributed control and information systems (DCIS) interface standards, and GE Vernova Mark* VIe distributed control system (DCS) module, network, and data communication standards.
- Provide leadership and drive for project execution excellence through standard work methods and tools to achieve high levels of integrity, safety, quality on-specification, delivery on-time, and on- budget or cost effectively.
- Inspire, coach, and provide oversight of team to drive technical and leadership professional knowledge, skill, and experience development enabling career growth opportunities.
- Establish and maintain strong working relationship with other internal GVH Nuclear and Architect Engineer (A/E) engineering managers, technical leaders, principal engineers, project engineers, project managers, product managers, business leaders, and other stakeholders.
- Interface with external partners, customers, and other applicable country specific regulatory agencies, as required on technical issues.
- Provide leadership of assigned work and ensure on-time fulfillment of engineering commitments in accordance with GVH procedures, contract requirements, industry standards, and nuclear regulatory guidelines.
- Lead in work identification, description, planning, qualified resource assignment, scheduling, interpreting schedule activity performance metrics, and manage the delivery of engineering work products.
- Provide guidance and manage external engineering resources, both staff augmentation contractors and defined scope sub- contracts, to ensure quality deliverables to aggressive project schedules, enable resource flexibility, access niche skillsets or talents, and improved cost positions.
- Support GVH LEAN initiatives for process improvement and simplification.
- Ensure adherence to GVH standards for integrity, safety, and quality as well as support the Corrective Action Program (CAP) with condition reports and Chief Engineers Office (CEO) with technical reviews.
- Protect GVH Intellectual Property (IP) and trade secret knowhow.
- Partner with business leadership to support preparation of product and technology development strategies, plans, roadmaps, risks mitigations, and associated recommendations.
- Support GVH business with new marketing, bid proposal development, and commercial project opportunities.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or related Science or technical discipline.
- 15 years of progressive experience in engineering design and/or technical project engineering leadership experience.
- 5 years of experience in the nuclear industry or equivalent large scale new build experience in heavy industry facilities, preferably the power industry.
Desired Characteristics
- Licensed Professional Engineer.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
- Deep knowledge, skill, and experience in the design of control systems design and comprehensive documentation as well as their configuration, and implementation on modern DCS [e.g.; GEV Mark* VIe, Emerson Ovation or DeltaV, Schneider Electric Triconex or Foxporo I/A, Honeywell Experian].
- High performing energetic leader with proven interpersonal skills to lead a team of highly experienced engineers and balance multiple demands and priorities to deliver results while exhibiting behaviors that promote strong team collaboration mindset.
- Experience with project management skillset including; communication, risk, work planning, scheduling, change management.
- Engineer-Procure-Construct (EPC) project experience and knowledge; preferably large industrial facilities or power plant projects.
- Proven ability to be a liaison between organizations that are operating in separate geographic locations and time zones.
- Understanding of nuclear industry and boiling water reactor (BWR) technology.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

For the United States
The base pay range for this position is $131,000 to $252,000. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate's experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for bonuses, such as a performance bonus/variable incentive compensation/equity. This position is expected to close on Friday September 5th.
The company pays a geographic differential of 110%, 120%, or 130% of salary in certain areas.
