Job Description:

The Doctors Company IT Team has an opportunity for a Data Engineer to join our IT team. This is a hybrid opportunity based in East Lansing, MI or Napa, CA.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field

  • 2+ years of experience in data engineering, data architecture, or related fields.

  • 1-3 years experience with data management, curating datasets, and transformation logic.

  • 1-3 years experience with data lake technologies, preferably including medallion architecture.

  • 1-3 years experience with data QA practices, including data validation and data cleanup.

  • Proven experience designing and managing scalable data delivery platforms and pipelines.

  • Strong proficiency in data engineering tools and technologies for ingesting, transforming, testing, deploying, and documenting data from internal systems and third-party sources.

  • Experience with modern software engineering practices, including version control (e.g., Git), code review, and release management.

  • Hands-on experience with structured and unstructured data systems, including search, vector, and graph databases, as well as Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems.

Responsibilities:

Central Data Delivery & Architecture

  • Design and manage a central data delivery platform enabling analysts and data scientists to develop business products and processes.
  • Provide design and oversight of data engineering and architecture for structured and unstructured data, including search, vector, graph databases, and RAG systems.

Data Engineering & Governance

  • Ingest, transform, test, deploy, and document data from internal systems and third-party sources.
  • Apply modern data and model governance practices and software engineering principles, including code review, version control, and release management.

Data Quality, Validation & Automation

  • Ensure the highest quality of data assets by:
  • Mitigating data errors (including AI hallucinations)
  • Validating at the field level
  • Correcting invalid or missing data in a standard way
  • Automating processes to prevent bias and manual mistakes.

Accessible & Consistent Data Models

  • Transform raw data into clean, accessible, and standardized data models to empower end-users to conduct their own analysis.
  • Encourage consistency of data flows, technologies, and transformations across business units and teams.

Single Source of Truth & Data Flexibility

  • Build and provide "Single Source of Truth" data models that include all relevant information (e.g., Submission, Quote, Bind, Policy, Claim, Billing, Third-Party Data).
  • Ensure models are standardized, flexible for new sources, support time-based analysis, provide data versioning, and accommodate both certified and end-user created models.

Technical Knowledge and Professional Development

  • Continue to seek learning opportunities from functional leaders and other team members
  • Identify and seek resources and opportunities for continued development.

Other Duties As Assigned

  • Accept delegated tasks willingly and follow through on assignments with accountability and attention to detail.
  • Take on various projects and assignments from management, ensuring timely completion and alignment with company goals.
  • Provide regular updates to leadership on assigned projects, meeting deadlines and delivering quality results.
  • Assist with department and company-wide initiatives, including research, surveys, audits, and process improvements.
  • Stay flexible and ready to take on additional responsibilities as needed to support team and organizational objectives.

Salary Range: $90,658 - $118,989

Compensation varies based on skills, knowledge, and education. We consider factors such as specialized skills, depth of knowledge in the field, and educational background to ensure fair and competitive pay.
