Overview
Yale University’s Cultural Heritage Collections and Scholarly Communication division is seeking a Data Engineer to ensure the quality, sustainability and effectiveness of cross-collection data transformation and enrichment pipelines, and to provide support and assistance in cultural knowledge management projects. This represents a unique opportunity to help bring together data describing millions of objects, spanning modern books and medieval manuscripts, fossils and natural specimens, paintings and musical instruments in an innovative and collaborative environment. This role is essential to fulfilling our commitment to provide useful and usable linked open data to stakeholders, including faculty and researchers, the collecting units, and application developers within the institution and beyond. We are seeking someone with an engineering mindset, an understanding of both the technologies and the cultural heritage domain, and a strong interest in data science and machine learning techniques.
The successful candidate will engage with content and technical specialists across the Cultural Heritage/Information Technology (CHIT) landscape within the university, implement reliable data transformation workflows, and assist with data modeling of cultural knowledge. The position reports to the Senior Director for Digital Cultural Heritage, within the Office of the Vice-Provost, and will work collaboratively with the collecting units, central Information Technology Services (ITS), and a dedicated data scientist. With the role’s central and collaborative nature, interpersonal and time management skills are essential. This role can be fully remote for an experienced candidate. Applications submitted without a cover letter aligning the candidate’s experiences with the position’s responsibilities will not be considered.
Required Skills and Abilities
Strength in Python, or demonstrated ability to translate experience from an equivalent language, is essential.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including when interacting with non-technical audiences.
Excellent personal time management skills, attention to detail, and quality of work.
Ability to focus and drive data-oriented projects to completion.
Project management, community management, and art/natural history experience are all pluses.
Preferred Skills and Abilities
- Advanced degree (Masters/PhD) in Library/Information Science or related field
- Experience in developing knowledge management/semantic systems
- Familiarity with Linked Open Data (JSON-LD, SPARQL)
- Use of cultural heritage standards like MARC, EAD, CIDOC-CRM
- Experience with test-driven, agile development for data processing
- Interest in data science, ML, AI, and data techniques
Principal Responsibilities
1. Design, implement and document data transformation pipelines to migrate, reconcile and enrich knowledge from Yale’s museums, libraries and archives into Linked Open Usable Data (LOUD)
2. Build test suites and data validation routines to deploy via continuous integration services to ensure the quality of the data transformation pipelines.
3. Transform data sourced from outside of the collection systems to enrich and supplement Yale’s cultural heritage records.
4. Work closely with software engineers in ITS to ensure the quality of integrated, downstream services, such as discovery portals.
5. Work closely with software engineers and content matter experts in the collecting units to assist with the quality and understanding of the incoming data.
