Copy Editor, Clinical/Continuing Education
Who we are
MJH Life Sciences®’ Copyediting Department strives to make every document we edit clear, concise, and correct. As the guardians of grammar and style, we lead trainings for our members and share our in-depth knowledge with other teams.
What you’ll do
As a Copy Editor, Clinical/Continuing Education, you will ensure that all editorial print and online materials meet high standards of accuracy and quality, are fact-checked as needed, and reflect the voice of respective publications while adhering to style guidelines. You will pay attention to detail and can adapt and multitask to meet deadlines quickly. The Copy Editor, Clinical/Continuing Medical Education reports to the Copy Supervisor, Content.
What you bring

- Experience focused on writing, editing, copyediting, design, production, proofreading, and quality control of printed materials and electronic content.
- Proven success in meeting hard deadlines in a production environment.
- Ability to consistently perform on complex publishing projects with multiple concurrent deliverables.
- Familiarity with design principles, typography, page layout, and text formatting.
- Familiarity with commercial printing and prepress norms and practices.
Day-to-day responsibilities, or your day-to-day work
- Copyedit electronic and print projects for clinical, peer-reviewed publications and continuing medical education (CME) and continuing education (CE) manuscripts in formats including MS Word, PDF, PowerPoint, Excel, hard copy, video transcripts, e-books, web pages, and creative collateral, to ensure accuracy.
- Proofread and correct electronic files, page proofs, and final artwork for grammar, spelling, and style to ensure all materials are error-free.
- Identify inconsistencies, offer suggestions to fix awkward or unclear language in body copy, and improve headlines/display type. Respect CME and Medical and Legal
- Review guidelines that may conflict with editorial style and brand guides.
- Check and apply proofing and design changes to documents and layouts using Adobe Acrobat Pro.
- Maintain strict adherence to deadlines.
- Ensure that all corporate, product branding, legal, and Pharmaceutical Promotion Compliance guidelines are explicitly followed.
In your first 30 days you…
Will focus on learning our editing style and become familiar with all publications and brands via a mix of practice and live assignments that are reviewed and workshopped by a member of department leadership.
In your first 60 days you…
Will be cross-trained on all assignments the department editors work on, such as editorial and events, marketing, and promotional documents.
In your first 90 days you…
Will work on a longer-term editorial project and work independently on custom content or CE/CME project.
Qualifications
- Experience with AMA Manual of Style 11th Edition and AP Stylebook.
- At least 3 years of editing/fact-checking experience, preferably in medical/scientific publishing.
- An advanced degree (master’s in a scientific field), BELS, or CSE certification is preferred.
- A bachelor’s degree from a 4-year college or university is required.
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and assignments with tight deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong proofreading skills, correct and efficient use of markup tools in Adobe Acrobat PDF markup.
- Experience with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, including the use of track changes, is required. Adobe Acrobat Pro experience is preferred, as is experience with content management systems.
