Program Description:
The NYC Breastfeeding Warmline was established in June of 2020 and specializes in providing free, virtual, language congruent, culturally respectful, lactation support to all families across the New York City. The program has since expanded to include the Queens Baby Café, free drop-in lactation clinics, in Corona and Jamaica, Queens, and is looking to expand further with additional virtual lactation support programs.
Summary of Position:
Public Health Solutions is seeking a compassionate, motivated, Spanish-speaking Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) to join our team in a part-time position in providing virtual lactation support to families throughout NYC. This role is essential for expanding access to breastfeeding support and requires a commitment to community engagement, advocacy, and education. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in lactation counseling and be prepared to take the next step in their career by working toward the International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) credential, with an expectation to pass the IBCLC exam within 18 months of hire. This position reports to the Program Manager.
Specifically the, Certified Lactation Counselor will:
- Provide Virtual Lactation Counseling: Deliver high-quality, evidence-based virtual lactation support to families, addressing common breastfeeding challenges, providing guidance on infant feeding techniques, and offering resources tailored to each family's needs.
- Community outreach: Develop and nurture relationships with community organizations, healthcare providers, and other key stakeholders to promote the program and increase awareness of available lactation support services.
- Deliver in-person support & be required to travel: While the position is primarily virtual, occasional in-person support will be required, including traveling to various locations across NYC boroughs to conduct outreach, attend community events, and provide in-person lactation support as needed.
- Education & Workshop Facilitation: Support and co-lead prenatal and postnatal breastfeeding education workshops for families, both virtually and in hybrid formats.
- Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate records of client interactions and interventions in compliance with privacy regulations and organizational standards.
- Systems Management: Use technology platforms effectively to track and manage referrals to streamline workflow process.
Qualification and Requirements:
- Required Certification: Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) or Certified Breastfeeding Specialist (CBS)
- Multilingual Required: Spanish, English
- 1-2 years of experience in lactation counseling preferred, ideally within diverse urban communities.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; additional relevant education is a plus.
- Commitment to IBCLC Pathway: Must be actively pursuing IBCLC certification, with the expectation to pass the IBCLC exam within 18 months of hire.
- Proficient in virtual communication tools (e.g., Zoom) and documentation platforms.
- Willingness to travel throughout NYC as necessary for community outreach and in-person support.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a culturally responsive approach to serving diverse communities.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining a collaborative team mindset.
- Passionate about breastfeeding support and committed to fostering a supportive, empowering environment for families.
