The Opportunity

USAA is seeking a Business Strategist Lead - Alternative Capital Solutions to drive transformative strategies in insurance capital management and risk financing. This role is critical in exploring alternative capital solutions such as Excess & Surplus (E&S) insurance, special purpose vehicles (SPVs), catastrophe risk solutions, reinsurance structures (quota share, parametric, and other mechanisms), and other innovative capital-raising approaches to enhance affordability and coverage for USAA members.

As a key member of the Property & Casualty (P&C) Innovation Team, the Lead will collaborate with internal and external partners to strategize, design, and test, and implement parametric insurance solutions and other capital strategies that reduce USAAs liability exposure while maintaining financial strength and a positive balance sheet. This role requires a deep understanding of capital markets, risk financing, parametric insurance, and the evolving insurance landscape to ensure sustainable and fiscally responsible innovation.

This candidate will also be responsible for managing and communicating the progress and outcomes of business strategic and operational efforts with senior leadership throughout the planning process and ongoing. Provides thought leadership, resources, support, guardrails, and guidance to enable senior leaders across CoSA and enterprise to achieve strategic goals. Contributes to the sustainability of CoSA and functional strategies while also ensuring all production and expense targets are achievable for the plan horizon.

This position can work remotely in the continental U.S. with occasional business travel.

What you'll do:

  • Leverages expert business acumen, critical thinking, abstract thinking, and empathy to independently reframe business problems into business opportunities.
  • Leads cross-functional teams to evaluate business strategies across Enterprise, P&C Group, and P&C entity-level viewpoints. Engages key stakeholders to facilitate comprehensive impact analysis across capital, liquidity, reinsurance, tax, accounting, legal, regulatory, risk, and operational disciplines.
  • Develops custom project approaches to uniquely address the specific needs of each defined initiative, ensuring a deep focus on achieving business objectives.
  • Leads diverse audiences, including partners, senior executive leadership, stakeholders and users towards a shared vision and desired outcomes through impactful communication and engagement strategies.
  • Conducts comprehensive strategic analysis employing advanced data analysis skills, to manipulate, interpret and study additional data sources to translate findings into comprehensive actionable insights for further business strategy development.
  • Synthesizes and interprets large amounts of quantitative and qualitative data to create narratives that communicate strategic recommendations These recommendations may include audience and market recommendations; vision, advantage, scope; experience guardrails; journey maps; prototypes; sketches; visual concepts; narratives; white papers; blueprints.
  • Maintains a deep understanding of business needs, goals, and challenges and connects all aspects of the business strategy to tell a cohesive, impactful story aligning to the enterprise corporate strategy.
  • Defines and executes recommendations to enhance the business strategy practice, ensuring alignment of business strategies to the enterprise corporate strategy
  • Elevates experience related opportunities to USAA strategic planning process.
  • Executes and evolves functional strategies developed in partnership with the CoSA strategy team.
  • Understands and supports the execution of functional, CoSA and enterprise strategies with functional implications.
  • Partners with the CoSA strategy team on the USAA strategic planning process.
  • Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

What you have:

  • Bachelor's Degree OR 4 years of related experience (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree.
  • 8 years of business strategy experience to include 4 years of experience leading strategy engagements.
  • Deep expertise in industries such as financial services and/or insurance.
  • Ability to identify strategic needs and lead all aspects of projects with sound business recommendations and alignment with key business partners.
  • Demonstrated experience influencing business decisions and driving strategic outcomes.
  • Demonstrated experience translating complex business strategy and vision into an executable business process and technology plan and successfully delivering component.
  • Demonstrated technical Consulting Skills including but not limited to, Hypothesis-driven problem solving; Primary Market research (e.g. interviews); Secondary Market research (e.g. desk research); Data analysis (e.g. what-if, sensitivity, etc.); Story Telling; PowerPoint / Excel; Presentation skills; Meeting Leadership
  • Advanced quantitative, analytical, written, and oral communication, and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders at all levels.

What sets you apart:

  • Master's degree (MBA, CFA, or actuarial credentials such as FCAS/ACAS preferred).
  • Experience designing and launching parametric insurance products, including climate-related, natural disaster, and supply chain risk solutions.
  • 10+ years of experience in insurance, reinsurance, capital markets, or risk financing, with a strong background in alternative capital strategies.

Compensation range: The salary range for this position is: $143,320 - $273,930.

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location.

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
