Great American is a leading provider of equine mortality insurance and related coverages, our staff is knowledgeable in all breeds and disciplines, such as Racing, Showing, Cutting, Dressage, Hunter/Jumper, Driving, Reining, Saddle Seat and Pleasure Riding.

The Equine Mortality Division is looking for an Associate Underwriter or Underwriter to join their team in Ocala, FL. This individual will be expected to work a hybrid schedule out of the Ocala, FL office. Job title and pay will be dependent upon successful applicant's level of experience.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

  • Evaluates and underwrites new and renewal business in accordance with Company underwriting guidelines and risk appetite within written authority.

  • Reviews premium and loss data on an individual account as part of renewal underwriting, change underwriting, or mid-term underwriting.

  • Analyzes risk information to make informed decisions on coverage, pricing, and terms.

  • Works closely with underwriters and brokers/agents to gather additional information and clarify application details.

  • Prepares and maintains underwriting files, ensuring all documents and approvals are properly filed.

  • Ensures proper documentation of underwriting decisions and compliance with state and federal insurance regulations.

  • Compiles reports on risk evaluations, policy statuses, and portfolio performance for underwriters and management.

  • Orders, reviews, and takes appropriate action on required reports, endorsement requests, service requests, and general correspondence.

  • Research and respond to questions from brokers/agents.

  • Communicates underwriting decisions clearly and effectively to internal teams, agents, and brokers.

  • Provides information to Processing that is needed to issue policies and endorsements on a timely basis. May issue, process or code transactions.

  • Monitors entry / processing to ensure data integrity and to avoid potential systemic issues.

  • Develops and maintains effective business relationships with internal and external customers/coworkers in order to attract and retain profitable business.

  • Interprets, explains, and markets products and services.

  • May provide guidance to less experienced staff and serve as a resource to other functional areas.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • Education: Associates Degree in Business, Finance, or a related field or equivalent experience.
  • Experience: Generally, a minimum of 6 months of related insurance experience. Continuing progress toward and/or the completion of a professional designation preferred, such as Agribusiness and Farm Insurance Specialist (AFIS).
  • Scope of Job/Qualifications: Performs work under moderate supervision. Performs standard duties utilizing often-complex processes/procedures on assignments of a routine nature. Possesses procedural knowledge and skills that enable task accomplishment. Demonstrates working knowledge of coverage and forms, provisions for policies written within the assigned territory/unit, workflow and systems. Foundational written and verbal skills. Works within standard, established authority limits.
