Job Description:

At SimpsonScarborough, we spend our days building brands that endure, inspire, and elevate the all-important work of colleges and universities in shaping our future. Recognized as a leader in the higher education marketing industry, we are a fully remote team of approximately 70 employees working coast to coast.

We’re looking for a Senior Web Developer to build scalable, high-performance digital experiences that connect modern web development with emerging AI capabilities. This role requires deep technical expertise, strong problem-solving instincts, and the ability to translate strategy and design into seamless, accessible, and performant digital products.

The Senior Web Developer partners closely with UX designers, strategists, developers, and creative teams to develop websites, applications, and AI-enabled experiences that are thoughtfully designed, technically sound, and built to scale. This role balances hands-on development with strategic consultation—bringing clarity to technical decisions, evaluating emerging tools and workflows, and helping shape the future of digital experiences across the agency.

What You’ll Do

  • Build responsive, accessible, and high-performing websites and applications using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, and modern frameworks such as React, Vue, Astro, and Next.js.

  • Develop and maintain full-stack solutions across CMS platforms and custom applications, including themes, templates, plugins, modules, APIs, and server-side functionality.

  • Leverage AI-assisted development tools and AI-powered integrations to improve workflows, enhance digital experiences, and deliver intelligent functionality such as search, personalization, chat, and content generation.

  • Partner closely with UX, Creative, Strategy, and Account teams to ensure technical feasibility, smooth handoffs, and cohesive user experiences across projects.

  • Establish scalable front-end systems, reusable components, and pattern libraries that improve consistency, efficiency, and maintainability across digital work.

  • Audit existing websites and platforms, identify opportunities for optimization, and recommend scalable technical solutions that support long-term client goals.

  • Contribute to technical documentation, code reviews, workflow improvements, and conversations around emerging technologies and best practices

What We’re Looking For

  • 5+ years of professional web development experience.

  • Strong expertise in HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, PHP, and modern front-end frameworks and libraries.

  • Experience developing within CMS platforms such as WordPress, Drupal, or similar systems.

  • Working knowledge of APIs, AI-assisted development tools, and integrating AI-driven features into digital products.

  • Experience with Git/version control systems and modern development workflows.

  • Strong understanding of accessibility, responsive design, SEO, and web performance optimization.

  • Ability to translate wireframes and design systems into polished, functional digital experiences.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with experience working across remote, cross-functional teams.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities independently in a fast-paced environment.

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with higher education CMS platforms such as Modern Campus, Cascade, or Terminal4.

  • Experience with platforms such as Vercel or Pantheon.

  • Familiarity with Laravel, Storybook, Tailwind CSS, or related frameworks/tools.

  • Experience implementing AI-driven functionality such as chat interfaces, semantic search, or content automation.

  • Contributions to open-source or developer communities.

Salary, Benefits & Perks

  • Salary starts at $100,000.00 and will be commensurate with experience.

  • Comprehensive benefits package including nationwide health, dental, and vision coverage, 401(k) with employer contribution, employer-paid life insurance and short-term disability.

  • Flexible time off (FTO) with additional time-off options, including sick, volunteer & bereavement leave, paid parental leave, a day off on your birthday PLUS two agency-wide closures in the summer and winter.

  • Monthly lifestyle stipend to supplement your routine wellness costs like streaming subscriptions, gym, or phone/internet costs.
