The Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) Senior Public Relations Specialist is a strategic communications professional who enhances and protects the reputation of Wounded Warrior Project. This role is responsible for positioning WWP as a leading voice on veteran issues through strategic thought leadership, public relations, and integrated communications initiatives. These efforts promote the organization's mission, programs, and services provided to warriors, their families, and caregivers.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as the lead on cross-functional projects to develop and execute integrated communications plans and campaigns.
  • Partner with teammates in Communications and Marketing to develop and deploy integrated thought leadership strategies and storytelling.
  • Serve as a communications subject matter expert for assigned projects or portfolios.
  • Provide guidance and share expertise with public relations teammates, serving as a project lead on key initiatives.
  • Advance key messages by researching and writing a range of content, including, but not limited to, press releases, media advisories, articles, blogs, op-eds, videos, executive bios, talking points, fact sheets, and speeches.
  • Identify subject matter experts within the organization, create thought leadership content, and develop and implement distribution strategies.
  • Plan and execute a range of media relations activities, including media training, media interviews, and press conferences and events involving executives, warriors, and other subject matter experts.
  • Cultivate positive relationships with the media and secure local, national, non-traditional, and trade media coverage for WWP; exercise sound judgment in representing WWP to the media and external stakeholders.
  • Build and manage relationships with internal teams and external partners to elevate WWP as a leading voice on veteran issues.
  • Work with agencies and other external vendors to execute thought leadership and public awareness campaigns.
  • Track and report on impact, media placements, content performance, share of voice on key issues, and campaign ROI.
  • Monitor and analyze media coverage and trending topics relevant to the organization and stay current on industry standards and trends.
  • Identify issues that may impact the organization's reputation and help develop communications plans to mitigate them.
  • Identify and advise on new public relations capabilities.
  • Prepare agendas and presentations for meetings.
  • Assist WWP teams with PR activities as needed for special events, fundraisers, and key initiatives.
  • Attend and actively participate in required training and/or meetings, including but not limited to New Teammate Orientation, WWP Cares, ASIST Suicide Prevention training, Leadership training, culture/team based training, or departmental huddles.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE

Requirements

  • Seven years of experience in communications, public relations, journalism, or related field.

Preferences

  • Seven years of experience with Microsoft Office programs: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
  • Four years of experience in copywriting, editing, photography, and videography (including Adobe Premiere and Photoshop).
  • Four years of experience with media analytics tools, e.g., Cision or Meltwater.
  • One year of experience working in the nonprofit or veteran services sector.

EDUCATION

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, business, journalism, or related field. Equivalent combination of applicable education, training, certification, and experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
