Interview with Remote.co

How and why did you start working remotely?

I was a federal contractor for over 10 years and I wanted to have a flexible work schedule and work at home.

What advice would you give someone considering a remote job?

You have to be very organized. Keep your work calendar up to date, set time in your schedule for breaks and social activities. Also, change your environment—I work at home or coffee shops.

What are the biggest benefits to working remotely?

Flexibility; save time from the commuting!

Do you keep a regular remote work schedule? What is it?

I have core hours that I have to be online—10-3 p.m. I normally work 8-4:30.

How do you avoid becoming distracted when working remotely?

I’m pretty focused on this job. I always have work or online learning that I can do to keep myself occupied.

What is a remote work pain point, and how do you address it?

It’s hard to network within the company virtually. I have joined different company-sponsored virtual communities, such as a women’s group, book club, and finance group on the internal site.

What gear can't you work remotely without?

  • Printer
  • Project plan book

How do you stay in touch with virtual teammates?

Microsoft Lync sessions and emails.

Do you have tips for saving money while working remotely?

My Keurig has saved me so much money from my daily Starbucks trips.

How has working remotely impacted your career plans?

It has not impacted my career goals. I’m still on track to move up the Cigna ladder.

How do you stay connected to your professional community virtually?

I’m active on LinkedIn. I meet my old coworkers for lunch on a monthly basis.

How has working remotely impacted your family life?

My family loves it. My children are happy I’m able to volunteer at their school on a regular basis.

How do you manage work life integration?

I shut down my computer at 5 p.m. every day.

How do you stay physically active while working remotely?

I go to a boot camp 3 times a week at 5:30 a.m.

How do you cope with feeling lonely while working remotely?

No, my black labrador retriever keeps me company.
