Outreach and Communications Associate

Position Overview: The American Wind Wildlife Institute (AWWI) seeks an Outreach and Communications Associate to work with a small, energetic, and product-driven team in executing AWWI’s outreach, communication, and development priorities. The Associate will contribute to AWWI’s marketing, media, web presence, stakeholder engagement, and other outreach activities to increase AWWI’s reach to key audiences. Our approach requires working closely with topic area experts to communicate fact-based information and create highly targeted messaging. We communicate to stakeholders that include members of the renewable energy industry, conservation/science organizations, state and federal decision makers, and researchers.

This is an exciting opportunity to work in an expanding and solutions-oriented field – the dynamic intersection of renewable energy and wildlife conservation – and with many of the nation’s top renewable energy producers and eNGOs. This position will report to the Outreach & Engagement Manager.

About AWWI: AWWI is an independent, nonprofit partnership of leaders in the wind industry, wildlife management agencies, and science and environmental organizations who collaborate on a shared mission: To facilitate timely and responsible development of wind energy while protecting wildlife and wildlife habitat. AWWI works closely with over 40 wind industry and conservation partners and many other advisors to build scientific research, strategies and tools, and best practices for environmentally responsible wind energy siting and operations.

Key Responsibilities: Working closely with the Outreach & Engagement Manager and other senior staff, the Associate’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Expand and improve outreach, communication, and membership recruitment efforts
  • Draft targeted outreach, communications, and marketing materials and web content, including articles, newsletters, fact sheets, press releases, letters to the editor, and social media posts
  • Track media coverage, manage press requests, and contribute ideas to expand AWWI’s media presence
  • Use analytics and SEO to analyze and increase AWWI’s web, social media, and event impact, including for new web projects, event websites, and virtual events
  • Contribute to organization and staffing of webcasts, workshops, conferences, and training events (all virtual during the COVID-19 pandemic)
  • Aid in publishing and distributing outreach content on AWWI’s website and in coordination with partner organizations
  • Copyedit and fact check outreach, communications, marketing, and educational content
  • Coordinate with freelance writers, graphic designers, and media consultants

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a communications or environmental-related field, or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum of 2 year of experience in a communications, outreach, or development role
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills
  • Experience and knowledge of marketing (including web-based tools, e.g., MailChimp), media, and press engagement
  • High level of proficiency working with CMSs (e.g., WordPress), SEO, and web platform analytics
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Strong aptitude for developing compelling and fact-based messages and narratives and creating highly targeted messaging for diverse stakeholder groups
  • A collaborative team member who is proactive, flexible, and able to manage and prioritize a variety of tasks while working in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work as part of a small team as well as independently
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Interest in renewable energy and wildlife conservation and commitment to AWWI’s mission

Additional qualifications desired include:

  • Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and basic graphic layout/design
  • Ability to generate creative ideas for presenting information through a variety of media to reach targeted audiences
  • Familiarity with the U.S. renewable energy and/or wildlife conservation landscape
  • Experience in nonprofit development and/or communications
  • Ability to connect business partner priorities with AWWI’s mission

Location, Compensation, and Benefits: This is a remote position. Due to the COVID pandemic, travel will be restricted. When it is deemed safe to travel, there may be some occasional travel. AWWI offers a generous, comprehensive benefits package for full-time employees.

Duration: This is a one-year term position with the opportunity for extension based on organizational funding.
