What we are looking for
Hakka Labs is looking for a Head of Content & Community to be responsible for all content & community efforts across our network internationally. Top data scientists, engineers, analysts and technical founders around the world look to our events for the best technical talks, career opportunities and community experiences.
Our flagship event, DataEngConf, is a deeply technical, 2-day, multi-track conference at the intersection of data -platforms, -science and -products beloved by our growing technical community and supported by amazing partners with strategic commitments to building the best AI products, teams and startups.
We also run a growing number of community-driven meetups which are springing up around the globe as ever increasing numbers of data geeks get excited about our vision and seek to participate.
What you will do
The Head of Content & Community will report to our founder (a former software engineer), and will work to design and execute our community strategy. We are successfully building a “no-bullshit” technical brand and the strength of our community is the main thing that differentiates us from the watered-down “data” conferences that already exist.
We source all our technical content from members of our own amazing community of data scientists, AI researchers, software engineers and academics. To succeed in this role, you must have previous software engineering experience yourself to be comfortable speaking the language of software engineers as well as the capacity to review technical content for quality.
Our content takes the form of technical talks at DataEngConf and our meetups, video content for Youtube, and deeply technical blog content via our Data Writing Collective (think ‘First Round Review’ for data scientists). You will design the systems and processes our team will implement to scale content creation – imagine yourself as the ‘Editor in Chief’ for all our live event and online content.
You will also be responsible to empower and grow our community of meetup organizers across the world and to create programs to help them maximize value from our network in order to be successful in their roles.
It’s an exciting time of growth for our business – we’re launching events internationally and you’ll be an important part of our global expansion. In 2019 our main challenges are growing our 3 core DataEngConf events (annually in SF, NYC, and Barcelona), while launching our next key market in Asia as we also expand our global meetup footprint.
Our Team & Approach
Our team is fully distributed and embraces the remote work lifestyle. You’ll have the freedom to work from your desired location while attending our conferences and building out our community worldwide.
We also strongly advocate the customer development model of the lean startup approach – our team is constantly exploring and testing ways to bring more value to our users. Our events are our “product,” and our marketing and community building efforts are driven by a close connection to our customers. As such, we use systems and design thinking to come up with new ways to solve challenging problems in product-oriented ways – not by simply using the tired, old playbook of basic event marketing techniques.
Why Work with Us
We’re a scrappy-but-global-startup (operating a growing cash flow positive business!) that hails from the 500 Startups school of ‘distribution hacking.’ We’re building a global community of highly demanded, deeply technical data professionals and academics.
Our network is our prime asset, and our community is made up of data engineers and scientists from every major tech company, as well as many influential startups backed by YC, TechStars 500 Startups and top VCs. DataEngConf sponsors include Facebook, Netflix, LinkedIn, Lyft, Spotify, Microsoft, Cloudera, Heroku, IBM, The New York Times and other great companies.
Data technologies are rapidly changing the world, and our community is at the epicenter of the hottest technical advancements and research in machine learning, computer vision, artificial intelligence, neural networks and deep learning. These technologies are literally transforming industries while simultaneously creating new opportunities and defining our future.
