About the Global Director of Finance

This is a remote and global position that can be performed from anywhere in the world! If you’re located in North America, this position can be performed at our Washington DC, Brooklyn, or Oakland offices, in Canada or remotely in the following states: CA, GA, MD, MA, ME, CO, MT, NY, NC, PA, SC, UT, VT, VA, WA, WI.

350.org is looking to hire a Global Director of Finance with experience working in a progressive non-profit environment. This position will lead and manage the Finance team with the purpose to shape and grow 350’s financial systems and capacity. The Global Director of Finance will lead the department’s strategy, create finance policies and work with the broader operations team, leadership teams and staff to deepen the organization’s understanding of finance and accounting.

Key Role and Responsibilities

GENERAL FINANCIAL AND ACCOUNTING FUNCTIONS

Directs all financial activities and accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, purchasing, payroll, bank reconciliations, audit, insurance and tax reports/compliance and planning and monitoring of cash flow. This will include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Ensures timely and accurate accounting of all transactions in accordance with US GAAP and IFRS (whenever applicable) standards.
  • Builds the appropriate Finance department, including systems and staffing, responsible for all day-to-day operational needs ensuring timely and accurate reporting on all levels;
  • Formulates, recommends, and implements sound fiscal policies, procedures and internal controls;
  • Supports the Managing Director in managing organizational cash flow, and identifying sources of cash to access as necessary;
  • Prepares departmental annual budget; oversees input of approved budget into accounting system; oversees input of approved budget into accounting system; supports the Managing Director and finance operations manager in preparation of organizational annual budget
  • Appraises organizational financial position; generates, analyzes, and presents regular fiscal reports to the Managing Director and/or Leadership team;
  • In coordination and consultation with the Managing Director, develops and oversees the implementation of long-term financial plans to achieve 350.Org’s objectives;
  • Facilitates and supervises annual financial audit(s) and 990’s or other tax/annual filings;
  • Trains staff on fiscal procedures, budget management, and use of accounting software;
  • In consultation and coordination with the Managing Director, develops structures for transparency within the organization’s financial systems, including regular budget presentations to all staff, so they can make informed, shared decisions about financial activities.

FINANCIAL GRANTS MANAGEMENT FUNCTIONS

Oversees financial management of all grants. This will include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Ensures fiscal requirements for grant agreements are identified, realized, and monitored;
  • Oversees financial grants management activities, including:
    • Preparation of periodic reports to funding sources;
    • Reporting of outstanding funding receivables, on a grant-by-grant basis;
    • Monitoring of all grant agreements to ensure compliance with fiscal reporting and determine the need for budget modifications;
    • Preparation of complex budgets, budget modifications, fiscal reports, and related documents for funders; and,
    • Production and analysis of monthly budget-to-actual reports to monitor spending against complex contracts;
  • Initiates conversations around budget modifications and program planning for under/overspending.

MANAGEMENT

  • Supervises and provides mentorship for a team of accounting and finance operations staff.
  • Leads recruitment efforts for finance team openings
  • Develops and manages the yearly strategy for the finance team
  • Works with direct reports to build out their yearly projects and work plans

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance. A CPA or Master’s degree highly desired;
  • Strong knowledge and command of US GAAP, some understanding of IFRS is a plus;
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience managing a team
  • Minimum 8 years of comparable accounting experience, demonstrating a clear increase in responsibilities in executive, managerial or supervisory capacity
  • Experience in an international nonprofit organization financial management, with strong fund and grant accounting expertise.
  • A deep understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion and the ability to work effectively with people from diverse racial, ethnic, class, age, gender, and sexual orientation backgrounds.
  • Strong experience and working knowledge of general ledger, accounts payable, domestic and international disbursements, income tax;
  • Keen analytic, organization and problem solving skills; experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to management;
  • Ability to translate financial concepts to individuals at all levels in the organization including non-finance employees;
  • Meticulous attention to detail demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness, organized, monitors own work to ensure quality;
  • Documented experience with computerized accounting system, preferably Intacct or similar with some understanding of an ERP migration and system.

Preferable

  • A CPA or equivalent,
  • Some experience with international accounting
  • Customer-oriented, positive attitude; and

  • Proactive, hands-on strategic thinker who is comfortable working in partnership with senior leaders; Independent problem solving ability;
  • Excellent written and communication skills, proficiency of English language (spoken and written) is required;
  • Experience working with Apple products, G-Suite and Slack
