Editorial and Copy Editor (Part-Time Contract)

What This Position Is All About

The Editorial and Copy Editor will oversee content proposals as well as create overall written content direction. They will execute the editorial growth strategy from inception to publishing for all current and future content channels. This direction will align with cross-functional team strategies to help drive overall company sales goals.

The position requires strong creative intuition, brand awareness, and passion for editorial growth strategy. Along with establishing and maintaining the voice of The Folklore, this position continuously pushes the brand forward, positioning The Folklore as the place that creates trends, rather than follows them.

You Also Have

  • Bachelor’s Degree in English, Journalism or related field
  • 3-5 years of experience in copywriting for retail, digital marketing, agency and/or online publications
  • Advanced understanding of English grammar
  • Strong knowledge of SEO content strategy and best practices
  • Strong interest and advanced knowledge of African and diasporic fashion, art, culture, music, and creative figures
  • Experience recruiting and managing a team of freelance writers
  • Experience working with Shopify is preferred but not required
  • Demonstrated competency in cross-cultural communication and program building
  • Proven ability to work cross-team and synthesize feedback and input from creative stakeholders

As The Editorial and Copy Editor, You Will


  • Maintain a consistent writing style and proofread written content for grammatical errors, voice/tone and substance across The Folklore’s website, podcast, newsletter, and social media pages
  • Drive mechanisms to improve visibility and relevance of content globally
  • Consult with the marketing and e-commerce team to develop the best SEO strategy with tone and creative storytelling in mind
  • Design team KPI’s that accurately measure engagement with editorial content, social media copy, and owning those goals


  • Create an editorial content schedule that aligns with product drops, shopping trends, special projects, original content series, and the overall look and feel of The Folklore’s brand
  • Edit, format, and publish 3-4 editorial posts a week using Shopify blogging tools
  • Recruit and manage a team of freelance writers and ensure they meet editorial deadlines. Edit copy for grammar, clarity, and appropriate messaging
  • Occasionally write articles and conduct interviews for the editorial section
  • Ensure appropriate and relevant creative visual assets are included in articles and meet SEO standards


  • Create conversational copy for all products that appear on the website that paints an accurate picture of the product, how it can be worn, and highlights its best features
  • Develop copy for all website information pages, product collections pages, and designer profiles
  • Consult with marketing and e-commerce teams to develop effective copy for homepage updates
  • Focus on SEO best practices and do an occasional audit to suggest and execute changes in the copy

Social Media/Email

  • Create written copy weekly to share across all social media platforms including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn
  • Use impactful hashtags, keywords, and communication practices that will encourage high engagement
  • Consult with the marketing team and buying team to ensure copy is properly representing products and overall messaging
  • Review copy for weekly newsletters and trigger campaigns, press releases, and other marketing materials with marketing department
