Position Description

This role is responsible for the team that manages legal affairs for UnitedHealthcare Medicare & Retirement and is the primary legal resource for the Medicare & Retirement executives. This role also serves as a key strategic and legal advisor for critical Medicare & Retirement business functions such as mergers & acquisitions, annual bid process, STARs, risk adjustment and other significant areas of Medicare & Retirement business emphasis. This positon works closely with Medicare & Retirement executives to not only manage risk, but to also help carry out significant priorities.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage, lead and develop a team of lawyers and legal professionals dedicated to supporting the Medicare & Retirement business
  • Advise the Medicare & Retirement business on legal risks and find solutions to legal and regulatory impediments
  • Understand business goals and assist in furthering those goals
  • Provide subject matter expertise on legal aspects of Medicare & Retirement
  • Identify key areas of risk and educate staff about risk prevention; act as a gatekeeper for any legal or regulatory matters
  • Provide counsel in areas of plan/provider relations, plan/vendor relationships and state or federal government relations
  • Collaborate with compliance officers to ensure the business operates in compliance with relevant federal and state laws and regulations
  • Develop and maintain an excellent understanding of the federal and state regulatory environment in which the Medicare & Retirement business operates as well as the operational details of the businesses
  • Operate in a strategic and pro-active manner in order to assist our clients in managing their relationships with government regulators and in managing the legal and regulatory risk related to federal healthcare programs as well as to prescription drug programs
  • Manage outside counsel on complex pre-litigation, litigation and regulatory or other issues
  • Interface with regulatory authorities as necessary
  • Work closely with the regulatory affairs, compliance and external affairs teams
  • Guide, coach and train others on legal issues

Required Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate degree
  • 15+ years of legal experience including Medicare, Medicaid and/or other healthcare related experience
  • Knowledge of practices associated with corporate, administrative, regulatory, managed care and/or contract law
  • Experience in interacting with state and federal regulators
